****Presented on Wednesday, June 15, 2022 by Ashleigh Levison, M.D. and Nicole O'Malley, M.D.
Obstructive sleep apnea is a common disorder that causes disruption in breathing during sleep due to repetitive collapse of the upper airway. Untreated, patients may suffer excessive daytime sleepiness, impaired daytime function, metabolic dysfunction, and increased risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality. In addition to serious systemic health concerns, sleep apnea can be a risk factor for numerous ocular conditions including glaucoma, non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, retinal vein occlusions, thyroid eye disease, floppy eyelid syndrome, central serous retinopathy, diabetic retinopathy, and diabetic macular edema.
This one-hour lecture features fellowship-trained practitioner of sleep medicine, Dr. Nicole O’Malley, and CRA's vitreoretinal surgeon and uveitis specialist, Dr. Ashleigh Levison in a discussion of the pathophysiology and treatment of sleep apnea and its ocular manifestations.
